Macy Phung on a break from screenwriting "World Peace" film
Why am I a filmmaker? The role of movies is of significant importance and responsibility. We can't underestimate the power of what is being seen in the movies, and how it affects and influences the world at large. A movie has the power to be seen by millions and billions of people. The role of a filmmaker, therefore, is powerful and impactful. There is a saying that facts can move minds, but a compelling story can move hearts. You may not remember a fact you learned, but you remember an intriguing story for life.
Movies are entertaining. They can make us laugh or cry. They can make us tense at the edge of our seats as we anxiously await what happens next. It's like an escape to some far off place that is deep in our minds and souls. We watch movies because maybe we are so tired of the world's mishappenings that going to see a movie is like breathing fresh air. In movies, anything is as possible. As long as we can imagine it, it's possible!
My next point is that movies mirror life, and life mirrors movies. Each can influence the other. Why not use movies as a positive influence to inspire? To bring about social good? That is the heart of my World Peace film in development. It's a cross-generational fantasy blockbuster for both the young and old, male and female, and of course the children. I love children as they are so innocent and cute. The ancient will resonate with the film as well.
So filmmakers, tell your stories, make movies, create, create, create -- because you never know how your powerful story can shape the life of any person in any country, place, or time around you.
Here's my favorite quote from Confucius:
"If your plan for one year, plant rice. If your plan is for 10 years, plant trees. If your plan is for 100 years, educate children."
